Indonesia Visa & Bali Visa Requirements: The Complete Guide for Every Nationality (2026)

"Do I need a visa for Bali?" is one of the most searched travel questions on the internet - and one of the most poorly answered. Most guides give you a generic yes/no with a random list pasted from somewhere else. The real answer depends entirely on your passport, and Indonesia's visa system has four completely different pathways depending on your nationality.

This guide covers all of them: which countries travel visa-free, which get the electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA), which nationalities are currently restricted, and which need to apply for a B211A visa before they fly - plus exactly how long each option takes and what it costs.

How Indonesia's Visa System Works - 4 Categories

Every nationality entering Indonesia falls into one of four categories:

  1. Visa-exempt (free entry) - mostly ASEAN and select partner nations, 30 days, non-extendable

  2. eVOA eligible - apply online before you fly, approved in hours to a couple of days

  3. B211A (C1) Visit Visa required - everyone not in the two categories above; must apply in advance, 8-10 business days processing

  4. Restricted / calling visa nationalities - a small list of countries requiring special clearance from Indonesian immigration headquarters before any visa can be issued

1. Visa-Free Countries for Indonesia (No Visa Needed)

Citizens of the following countries can enter Indonesia for tourism without any visa at all. This gives you a 30-day stay that cannot be extended - if you want to stay longer, you'll need a different visa arranged in advance.

Belarus

Brazil

Brunei Darussalam

Cambodia

Colombia

Hong Kong

Kazakhstan

Laos

Macau

Malaysia

Myanmar

Peru

Philippines

Singapore

Suriname

Thailand

Timor-Leste

Türkiye

Vietnam

Singapore Permanent Residents also qualify for visa-free entry when passing through specific designated Indonesian immigration checkpoints.

Important: several of these countries (Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar, Laos, Timor-Leste, Suriname, Colombia, Hong Kong, Türkiye, Brazil, Peru, Kazakhstan, Belarus) also appear on the eVOA list below. That's not a mistake - visa-free entry covers short tourist stays, while the eVOA is the option for a longer stay or a different purpose (like a business meeting).

2. eVOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) Eligible Countries

If your country is on this list, you apply online before departure, pay the eVOA fee, and receive approval typically within a day or two - no need for a full visa application. This is the fastest legitimate pathway into Indonesia for tourism.

eVOA basics: single entry, 30-day stay (extendable once for another 30 days from within Indonesia), valid for tourism, government visits, business meetings, or purchasing goods.

3. Restricted Nationalities - "Calling Visa" Required

A small number of nationalities cannot obtain any standard Indonesian visa without additional clearance directly from Indonesian immigration headquarters in Jakarta - commonly referred to as a "calling visa." This process sits outside the normal B211A pipeline and can take significantly longer, with no guaranteed timeframe.

Currently restricted nationalities include:

  • Afghanistan

  • Israel

  • North Korea

  • Liberia

  • Nigeria

  • Somalia

If you hold a passport from one of these countries, standard visa agents (including us) generally cannot process a straightforward application - this needs to go through the calling visa clearance process with Indonesian immigration directly, and timelines vary case by case.

4. All Other Nationalities - B211A (C1) Visit Visa Required

If your country isn't on the visa-free list or the eVOA list, and isn't a restricted nationality, you need to apply for a B211A (C1) Visit Visa before you travel. There's no visa-on-arrival option and no walk-up counter - this visa must be approved before you board your flight.

This applies to every nationality not already listed in the visa-free, eVOA, or restricted categories above. In full, that includes:

Common Mistakes Travellers Make

  • Assuming eVOA eligibility because a friend used it. Eligibility is nationality-specific, not based on where you live. An Australian resident with a non-eligible passport still needs the B211A.

  • Applying too late. The B211A takes 8-10 business days minimum - applying the week before you fly leaves no room for delays.

  • Confusing visa-free entry with eVOA. Visa-free entry is fixed at 30 days with no extension. If you need longer or you're not sure which applies to you, check before booking non-refundable accommodation.

  • Assuming Indonesia visa rules are different from Bali visa rules. They're identical - Bali is part of Indonesia, so whichever category applies to your passport for "Indonesia" applies for Bali specifically too.

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Bali?

It depends on your passport. Some nationalities travel visa-free for 30 days, some qualify for the eVOA, and most other nationalities need a B211A (C1) Visit Visa approved before departure. Bali follows the same visa rules as Indonesia generally.

What is the difference between eVOA and B211A visa?

The eVOA is a fast, self-service online application available only to citizens of eligible countries, typically approved within a day or two. The B211A (C1) is Indonesia's standard visit visa for nationalities not eligible for the eVOA, and takes 8-10 business days to process.

Which countries can enter Indonesia visa-free?

Mostly ASEAN nations and select partner countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Türkiye, Hong Kong, Macau, and Suriname. This gives a fixed 30-day stay that cannot be extended.

How long does an Indonesia B211A visa take?

Standard processing is 8-10 business days. Some nationalities can access an express service (5-6 business days) for an additional fee. We recommend applying at least a month before travel.

Can Nigerian, Afghan, or Israeli citizens get an Indonesia visa?

These nationalities, along with North Korea, Liberia, and Somalia, are currently classified as restricted and require special "calling visa" clearance directly from Indonesian immigration headquarters, with no standard processing timeline.

Is the Bali visa the same as the Indonesia visa?

Yes. Bali is part of Indonesia, so there's no separate "Bali visa" - whichever visa category applies to your nationality for Indonesia applies equally whether you're flying into Denpasar, Jakarta, or anywhere else in the country.
